GSM and optical links are used as examples to teach RF communication. The requirements on the different components are explained based on the GSM standard. Therefore effects and parameters like noise factor, intermodulation, and harmonics are introduced. Different modulationtechniques as FM, AM, GMSK, and QAM are presented. The resulting topologies for transmitter and receiver are derived from these modulations. Finally system design like level planing and partitioning of the requirements of different building blocks are evaluated.
